Defining And Understanding Reflective Practice Reflective Practice was introduced by Donald Schà ¶n in his book The Reflective Practitioner in 1983; however, the original idea of reflective practice is much older. John Dewey was one of the first American philosophers /psychologists to write about Reflective Practice, with his exploration of experience, interaction and reflection. Other researchers, such as Kurt Lewin, Jean Piaget, William James and Carl Jung were developing theories of human learning and development. Deweys works inspired Donald Schà ¶n and David Boud to explore the boundaries of reflective practice. Central to the development of reflective theory was interest in the integration of theory and practice, the cyclic pattern of experience and the conscious application of that learning experience. For years, there has been a growing literature and focus around experiential learning and the development and application of Reflective Practice. Donald Schà ¶ns 1983 book introduces concepts such as reflection on action and reflection in-action where professionals meet the challenges of their work with a kind of improvisation learned in practice. Reflective Practice has now been widely accepted and used as developmental practices for organizations, networks, and individuals. As Boud et al states: Reflection is an important human activity in which people recapture their experience, think about it, mull it over and evaluate it. It is this working with experience that is important in learning. Reflective Practice can be seen and has been recognized in many teaching and learning scenarios, and the emergence in more recent years of blogging has been seen as another form of reflection on experience in a technological age. Reflective Practice is paying critical attention to the practical values and theories which inform everyday actions, by examining practice reflectively and reflexively. This leads to developmental insight. The importance of reflecting on what you are doing, as part of the learning process, has been emphasised by many investigators. Reflective Observation is the second of the Kolb learning cycle. Reflective practice is an active process of me witnessing my own experience in placement in order to take a closer look the way I progress or where I may be weak at something and to explore it in greater depth. This can be done in the middle of an activity or as an activity in itself. The main thing about reflection is learning how to take a perspective on my own actions and experience. By developing my ability to explore and be curious about my own experiences and actions. Where I can open up the possibilities of purposeful learning. The purpose of reflection is to allow the possibility of l earning through experience, whether that is the experience of a meeting, a project, a disaster, a success, a relationship, or any other internal or external event, before, during or after it has happened (Amulya, Joy What is Reflective Practice? The Centre for Reflective community Practice). Certain kinds of experiences create particularly different opportunities for learning through reflection. Struggles provide a window onto what is working and what is not working and may often serve as effective tools for analysing the true nature of a challenge that I may face. Some struggles show a problem, which can provide a good source of information about a clash between my values and my approach to getting something done. Reflecting on my experiences of uncertainty helps shed light on areas where an approach to my work is not fully specified. Positive experiences offer good sources of learning. For example, doing and thinking are very helpful in revealing what was learned and how successfu l it turned out to be. Breakthroughs can also instruct on an emotional level. By locating why and when we have felt excited or fulfilled by an experience, I can gain insight into the conditions that allow my creativity to expand. Now I can become more purposeful not just about my learning but about how to work in more creative and sustaining ways. Reflective practice is simply creating a habit, structure, or routine around studying an experience. A practice for reflection can vary in terms of how often, how much, and why reflection gets done. Reflection can also vary in depth from simply noticing present experience to deep examination of past events. Reflection can be practiced at different frequencies: every day, every week or even months. When on placement I think it would be important for me to have reflection on a weekly basis with my assigned supervisor, as daily would be a lot more repetitive and monthly would be too far apart especially as it my first time in this setting. I can think of many benefits when using reflective practice in my work placement. First, because Im in the business of protecting young people. I need to be clear that I do protect the young people and myself when I am in my work placement. A bit of thought and planning may now be of huge benefit later. Something that I have found through studying this subject in the last year is that reflection seems to create a certain clarity and sense of safety around this area of work I am going in to. The log I will use is a very safe way of offloading and debriefing I, as well as discussions with colleagues and managers. It enables me to avoid stress and it helps me to move forward from worry and frustration at service users, colleagues and departments. It helps me to understand why I feel this way, why it needs to be this way, and how what I do could potentially change this situation positively. Id use this to change my negative energy to positive. By doing this I can go a long way toward keep ing well at my placement, which can affect the service delivery and ultimately the way in which I do my business with the young people. The constant weight of handling issues and prioritization is a concern as a future youth worker I worry about going in to placement. It is easy to get caught in the overwhelming feeling of loads in paperwork, young people with high needs, and balancing everyday tasks. When I feel this way, I need to down for myself and briefly run through my priorities, I can look at how I can work smarter, maybe delegate tasks to young people or their families, therefore empowering them and including them in planning for the young people. We can look at how we can establish a work-life balance, while still getting through all tasks and complying. A balance is possible with some thought, care and of course the policies in place, which supports work-life balance and understands its importance in terms of overall success and health of its work force and work practices . Instead of finding myself bogged down with constraints, if Im serious about my role as youth worker, I can truly focus on the young people I will serve and what would be in the best interests for them young, even if what I think would be the best solution is not unlikely. The benefits of reflection in terms of collaborative practice with other agencies and wider communities open many doors to my understanding of roles and responsibilities, and it can be critical in removing boundaries and stopping me from blaming others. Its my personal responsibility to do my reflection, for speaking up and letting people know what I think and why through this process. Another part of reflection is being able to use the criticism that I may face and utilize it. So I can turn the situation on its head, and learn something positive from it. Instead of being defensive and subjective. In conclusion, the importance of critical and reflective practice is difficult to measure and often under-estimated, yet it is crucial to our professional and personal development. More important, I feel that reflection helps and prepares me to be accountable and responsible for the very difficult decisions and challenges we often face in child protection and allows us to make good choices and have better outcomes for young people. Fishing †The Best Hobby Essay -- Essays Papers Sports Recreation

Fishing – The Best Hobby Work—just the word is enough to make me nauseous sometimes. Look at the definition of the word: work—effort exerted to do or make something; labor, toil. It isn’t exactly the definition of fun. Okay, granted work isn’t always awful. There are plenty of people who like their jobs, and work can even be fun. But for the most part, we all know that we’d rather be doing just about anything other than working. Luckily for us, we don’t work all the time. No, we sleep, eat, drink, and have fun. How do we have fun? Well, some of us might get our pleasure from eating or drinking, sometimes a little too often. Others of us might have fun spending time with our companions or family, but usually when we think of having fun, we think of actually doing something: playing a game, reading a book, going swimming, whatever it may be. We call these ways that we have fun our hobbies. There are quite possibly an infinite number of hobbies. Who knows how many d ifferent ways there are for people to have fun. When it comes to me and my hobbies, however, there is one in particular that stands out above the rest. Fishing is definitely the best way to have fun. Fishing is the best hobby there is. Why am I so excited about fishing? Why am I so certain that it is my favorite hobby? While I could go on and on about the joys of fishing, there are three major reasons why I think it’s so great. They are that it is a relatively inexpensive hobby, it is very easy, and, most importantly, there are so many ways, and so many people who can have fun doing it. Fishing is cheap. If you’ve ever looked at a bait and tackle magazine, you might be thinking, yeah, right. You know, you’ve looked in one of those magazines and seen rods and reels that cost over a thousand dollars and lures that are upwards of twenty bucks, just for one lure. If you are thinking this, then you’re right. If you want to fish with professional quality equipment, you are going to spend those kinds of prices. But that’s true for any hobby; professional-grade equipment is going to be very expensive. An official major league baseball, identical to the ones they use in games, costs over ten dollars. When was the last time any of you went out and spent ten dollars for a baseball to play catch with. No, I’m not talking about being a professional fisherman; admittedly, that isn’t cheap. W... ...ve as much fun just riding in the boat as you do catching fish. Another person might think of fishing from a boat, but that person’s perfect fishing trip might be floating in a canoe down a country river. Believe it or not, fishing can even be fun for people who are petrified of the water. Some of the biggest fish ever caught are hooked from riverbanks, fishing piers, or bridges, without the fisherman getting so much as a toe wet. This is why fishing is so great, and I’m not going to even bother comparing it to another hobby, because there is none like it. No, there is no other hobby that can be enjoyed by so many people, in so many places, for so many reasons. As I said before, there are an infinite number of hobbies that people have and it’s very unlikely fishing is your favorite hobby. I’m sure you can spit right back in my face any number of reasons why your hobby is so great, and you’d probably be right. But before you do that, stop and think about this. Is your hobby or any other hobby you can think of as inexpensive, as easy to learn, or as enjoyed by so many different people as fishing? I doubt it. That is why I love fishing so much; that is why fishing is the best.

The Black Walnut Tree

Dana Doherty â€Å"The Black Walnut written by Mary Oliver, concerns the narrator's and her mother's struggle to decide whether they will have a tree on their property cut down. If they decide to have the black walnut tree removed and sell it for lumber, they will be able to pay off their home's mortgage; however, if they remain faithful to the tree and their heritage, they risk the tree collapsing onto their home resulting in its destruction.The start of the poem introduces the debate outright. However, as the speaker of the piece, or the author herself, makes her case it seems rather one sided, all arguments are in favor of cutting down the tree. The tone is literal, all making reference to the physical damages that could be caused if the tree remains. The author uses diction to convey this tone using words such as â€Å"likely† and â€Å"navy's† which add not only a casual and conversational element to the piece, but also one Of doubt.The poem shifts as the speaker describes â€Å"but something brighter than money moves in our blood- an edge sharp and quick as a trowel. † Here is where Oliver begins to employ figurative language as this â€Å"something† is making reference to the symbolic meaning behind the tree. As the poem mutinous the narrator makes reference to dreams of her father and her and of her mother's willingness to crawl with shame in their â€Å"father's backyard. Harvesting from the tree, as suggested by the piece, is a way of connecting with the agricultural ways of their forefathers. The tree is their connection to the past and the debate is not so much over the mere life of a tree, but between living comfortably and sticking to their roots. The end of the poem speaks about the tree as it continues to remain in the yard. The author describes the way her mother and her would â€Å"crawl in shame at the emptiness we'd made. † if they were to sell the tree.As the poem comes to a close the author writes †Å"so the black walnut tree swings through another year of sun and leaping winds, of leaves and bounding fruit. † This passing of time is representative of the joys and sorrows, the rise and falls of a life. They live with the presence of the tree, a life where they live in a way that remains close to their roots and their family. However, the closing words of the piece make references to the tree and the way it continues to endure the â€Å"cracking whip of the mortgage† suggesting that the struggle continues on.

And when they say ‘bully, we tend to think of it as someone as large, strong, scary, muscular guy that trips on the weak smaller guy. But as the world shift into modern times, modern versions also arise.Verbal bullying can be Just as cruel if not worse than physical bullying. And this time the emotional phase Is at stake. Not only can this cause trauma, but It also drive you crazy and cause mental Illness. The bully will give more pain mentally than physically because they will degrade their target, making them feel less about themselves. There is also this ‘cyber bullying', where the bullying steps up on the high-tech level. The bully will take on less time on going to his victim to punch him.He just texts or calls his object or uses the internet, to spread bad words bout his target. This is the issue that arouse together with the social media networks, Its negative effects In every aspect of a person, physically, mentally, emotionally. Socially. The World Wide Web Is now techno tool for these bullies to commence their operation and harass their victims online. And it doesn't stop when the target goes offline. Of course, the bullying would cause negative social views to the victims.They would not go out and socialize through any form because of the trauma and depression of being harassed online. I never experienced bullying. When I was a kid, I was sort of the bully. I don't know how It happened but I could make the other kids obey me whenever we play that time. Add to that I was being spoiled by my grandma, whenever my grandma would always give me what I want. I also remember biting my pre-school teacher during tutorials after class because I want to go home already. My aunts and uncles would tell stories on how I was kind of ruthless that time.They said I would punish the kids if they disobey me by pulling heir hair straight to the ground, and I would smash their tiny little hands by a stick many times. They say I was never stopped because my grandma would always defend me. Okay, I really was a bully. I never said what I did was right. And the important thing is that mentality was straightened, somehow. I still was to persecute, yes, persecute, the deserving to be punished, really, but I don't perform it because, of course, it was a bad thought, also I think it was, in some way, childish to bully at my GE.Although we always see the bully as the bad guy, we could perhaps understand them. If we hate them so much, we're no different to them. So let's look deep and comprehend on why these behaviors are superior to the bullies. Maybe they had a they took bullying as a defense mechanism. Bullying never really cause anything good to people. The victims would oftentimes suffer to depression, trauma, misery, inferiority, rejection, distress, and a lot more of physical, emotional, mental, social main bullying comes with.I really am against bullying. Of course, no one would want them, or their children, or brother, or sister, or friend, or anyone close to them, to be bullied and brought down. We want to end this. We want to take a stand and protect the ones we love. We wouldn't really understand bullying and why it happens to, nowadays, a lot of people unless we open our minds. And this is one of my targets as a psychology student, to know them, understand them, and to eventually make a better change.
